2010 Overall Winners

Overall Winner for Best Small Company

Kernan’s Eurospar

The nominees for the Overall O2 Ability Award 2010 for the Best Small Company were Imaginosity, Kernan’s Eurospar and McDonald’s Drive-Thru, Ennis. The winner was Kernan’s Eurospar.

The Kernan family have been involved in retailing since 1920’s and is presently in its 3rd generation under the stewardship of Anthony Kernan. Kernan’s Eurospar is in Stranolar Co. Donegal and is a supermarket and diner.

The Judges believed that Kernan’s had learned a lot through running their other stores, and through being an Ability Company. So when given the opportunity to build on a green field site, which the Stranolar franchise was, they grabbed that opportunity to design and build a better place for their employees and customers with disabilities. This ambition to constantly improve, even though standard was already very high, gave Kernan’s the edge.

Overall Winner in the Private Sector

Abbott Vascular, Clonmel

The nominees for the Overall O2 Ability Award 2010 in the Private Sector were Abbott Vascular, Citi and the National Aquatic Centre. The winner was Abbott Vascular.

Abbott Vascular is uniquely focused on transforming the treatment of vascular disease and improving patient care by combining the latest medical device innovations with world-class pharmaceuticals, investing in research and development and advancing medicine through training and education.

Abbott Vascular strives to have a work force that reflects the diversity of the community they work in. There’s a strong executive level commitment to diversity and disability. Best practice was evident in all areas assessed under the O2 Ability Awards programme. It’s part of their culture, just natural to the organisation to include people with disabilities. They hire for talent, recognise the contribution of their employees who acquire a disability and do everything they can to retain those skills and knowledge that employees have developed during their career with Abbott Vascular.

Abbott Vascular Overall Private Winner


Overall Winner in the Non-Private Sector

Cavan County Council

The nominees for the Overall O2 Ability Award 2010 in the Non-Private Sector were Cavan County Council, South Dublin County Council and Trinity College Dublin. The winner was Cavan County Council.

Cavan County Council is a local authority which has statutory responsibility for the provision of a wide range of social, infrastructural and recreational facilities to the people of County Cavan. These services are spread across eight programme groups which include; housing and building, road transportation and safety, water services, development incentives and control, environmental protection, recreation and amenity, agriculture, education, health and welfare and miscellaneous services.

The decision to pick Cavan County Council as the overall winner was a well debated discussion among the judges. Cavan were ultimately triumphant because best practice in the inclusion of people with disabilities as both employees and citizens is really embedded in their organisation, permeates throughout the organisation, top to bottom, it’s just part of everything they do. Also, Cavan’s initiatives cover a wide spectra of disabilities, not focused on any one or two in particular.
